How do I ship a car from the USA to the UK?
What Bold Does — and What We Don't
Shipping a vehicle from the United States to the United Kingdom is a two-stage move. Bold Auto Transport handles stage one: picking up your vehicle from anywhere in the continental U.S. and delivering it to a U.S. port of export. From there, your freight forwarder or NVOCC handles the ocean crossing on a RoRo vessel or in a shared container.
We're transparent about scope because the wrong promise from a domestic carrier is the most common cause of delays at the port. Bold is not a freight forwarder. We don't book ocean freight, prepare an EEI/AES filing, or clear UK customs. What we do is get the vehicle to the dock, on time, at a competitive U.S.-domestic rate.
If you don't yet have a forwarder, we can refer you to a few we've worked with on past UK exports. Most U.S. expat shippers and military families already have one lined up before they call us.
How USA-to-UK Car Shipping Works With Bold
The end-to-end timeline from quote to UK delivery is typically 6 to 10 weeks. Bold's portion is the first 3–10 days. Here's the full sequence:
- You book your ocean freight first. Choose a forwarder, decide between RoRo and container, and lock in the sailing date. The forwarder gives you a "cargo cut-off" date — the latest your vehicle can arrive at the port.
- Get a Bold quote with the port address. Use our cost calculator with your origin ZIP and the destination port (we ship to all four major auto-export ports).
- We dispatch a carrier within 24–72 hours. Door-to-port is treated as a standard U.S. lane — same trucks, same insurance, same drivers as a regular state-to-state shipment.
- Pickup and inspection. Driver completes a Bill of Lading inspection at your origin. Take photos. Standard open-carrier loading.
- Port delivery. Driver delivers to the warehouse address your forwarder provided. The forwarder takes possession and handles all U.S. export paperwork (EEI/AES filing through ACE) and ocean loading.
- Ocean transit. Roughly 11–18 days at sea depending on routing.
- UK arrival and clearance. Your forwarder's UK partner clears HMRC, you pay import duty (~10% on used vehicles, plus 20% VAT), and the vehicle is released.
- UK registration. File HMRC NOVA (Notification of Vehicle Arrival) within 14 days of customs clearance, apply for DVLA registration, schedule an MOT test, and complete an IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval — formerly SVA before 2009) test if the car was not built to EU/UK type approval.
U.S. Ports of Export We Deliver To
RoRo vessels for UK-bound auto cargo sail mainly from these four ports. Each has different sailing schedules and freight density, so confirm with your forwarder before booking domestic transport.
| U.S. Port | Best For | Sample U.S. Lane | Bold Estimate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baltimore, MD | East Coast origins, fastest UK transit | NYC → Baltimore (~190 mi) | $450–$650 |
| Newark / Port Elizabeth, NJ | Northeast and Mid-Atlantic origins | Boston → Newark (~225 mi) | $475–$675 |
| Houston, TX | Texas, Southeast, Midwest origins | Dallas → Houston (~240 mi) | $475–$675 |
| Long Beach / LA, CA | West Coast origins (longer ocean transit to UK) | Phoenix → Long Beach (~370 mi) | $600–$850 |
For longer cross-country lanes (e.g., Seattle to Baltimore), expect $1,400–$2,200 on the U.S. domestic side. Standard open transport rates apply — door-to-port pricing is no different from any other U.S. lane.
RoRo vs. Container: What Your Forwarder Will Ask
This is your forwarder's call, not ours. But it affects how Bold delivers the vehicle, so here's the short version:
- RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) — The vehicle is driven onto the ship under its own power. Cheapest option (~$1,200–$1,800 ocean freight to Southampton). Vehicle must be operable, with a quarter-tank of fuel max. Most personal vehicles ship this way.
- Shared (LCL) container — Vehicle is loaded into a 20ft or 40ft container shared with other cargo. Better protection, slightly higher cost (~$1,800–$2,500). Required for non-running vehicles, classics, or motorcycles.
- Sole-use container — Whole 20ft container for one vehicle. Best protection, premium pricing ($2,500–$4,000). Common for high-value cars going to UK collectors.
Bold delivers to the same port warehouse regardless of mode. If your vehicle is non-running, mention it on the quote — non-op surcharge is $150–$300 on the U.S. domestic side, separate from any container-loading fees the forwarder charges at the port.
UK Import Duty, VAT, and Registration — Plain English
We're not customs brokers and we're not pretending to be. The numbers below are general guidance circa 2025–2026. For an authoritative figure, ask your UK forwarder or check gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk.
- Import duty: Roughly 10% of the customs value (vehicle + ocean freight + insurance) for used cars built outside the EU. Approximately £200–£400 on a typical used U.S. vehicle.
- VAT: 20% of (customs value + duty). This is the biggest line item — often £2,000–£4,000 on a $20K vehicle.
- IVA test: Individual Vehicle Approval (formerly SVA before 2009). Required for vehicles not built to EU/UK type approval (most U.S.-spec cars). Tests headlights, speedometer (mph required), emissions, lighting. Typical cost £200–£450.
- HMRC NOVA filing: Notification of Vehicle Arrival must be filed within 14 days of the vehicle clearing UK customs. Free, but missing the window blocks DVLA registration.
- MOT test: Once IVA is done and DVLA registration issued, schedule an MOT (annual UK roadworthiness test). ~£55.
- DVLA registration: Submit form V55/5 (used import) with proof of import, IVA certificate, NOVA reference, and insurance. Allow 4–6 weeks for first UK plates.
- TOR1 (Transfer of Residence) relief — for permanent movers: If you've owned the vehicle for >6 months and lived outside the UK for >12 months, you can apply for TOR1 relief and have import duty + VAT waived entirely. Single biggest cost lever for U.S. expats relocating to the UK.
- 30-year classic exemption: Vehicles 30+ years old at import are exempt from IVA testing entirely.
None of the above is Bold's job. We mention it so you're not surprised when your forwarder hands you a UK-side bill.

First time using a company like this, very polite from the dispatcher to the driver. Was able to get my car towed in a reasonable time and within the time frame they gave out. Also very reasonable with the price. Would definitely use them again if I had too.

USA to UK Shipping FAQs
Honest answers about scope, cost, and the handoff to your freight forwarder.
Does Bold ship the vehicle all the way to the UK?
No. Bold handles the U.S. domestic leg only — door pickup to a U.S. port of export. Your freight forwarder handles ocean freight, U.S. export filing (EEI/AES), and UK customs clearance. We're transparent about this because hidden surprises at the port are the most common cause of delayed UK shipments.
Which U.S. port should I ship to?
Your forwarder decides based on the sailing schedule. Most UK-bound auto exports leave from Baltimore, Newark, Houston, or Long Beach. Baltimore has the densest UK schedule and shortest ocean transit (~11 days to Southampton). Long Beach is a longer ocean trip and is mainly used for West Coast origins.
Do you recommend a freight forwarder?
We can refer you to a couple we've worked with on past exports, but we don't take referral fees and don't have an exclusive partner. Most expats and military families already have a forwarder lined up before they call. If you don't, ask the forum at ExpatForum or the relocation officer at your duty station.
How much does the U.S. domestic leg cost?
From $450 (short east-coast lanes like NYC → Baltimore) to $1,500+ (long cross-country lanes like LA → Houston). Pricing is identical to a normal open transport shipment of the same distance — there's no "international handling" surcharge on the U.S. side.
Can you ship a non-running vehicle to the port?
Yes. Add a $150–$300 winch-loading surcharge for the U.S. leg. Note that non-running vehicles can't ship RoRo on the ocean side — your forwarder will need to load it into a container at the port, which adds $400–$800 in handling. See our inoperable vehicle shipping page for details on the U.S. side.
How long is the total USA-to-UK transit?
Typical end-to-end is 6–10 weeks: 3–10 days domestic (Bold), 1–3 weeks at the U.S. port waiting for the sailing, 11–18 days ocean transit, then 1–3 weeks for UK customs clearance, NOVA filing, IVA, and DVLA registration. Plan accordingly — don't book a UK rental car expecting your vehicle in 2 weeks.
