How do I ship a car from the USA to Germany?
The U.S. Leg of Your Germany Shipment
Most USA-to-Germany car shipments are done by people relocating long-term — U.S. military and civilians on SOFA orders, expats taking corporate assignments, returning Germans bringing their American car back, and a small market of German collectors importing U.S. classics and pickups.
Whatever your reason, the move has two halves. Bold runs the first half: your driveway to a U.S. East Coast port. Your freight forwarder runs the second half: ocean freight, EEI/AES export filing, German customs, and TÜV scheduling on arrival.
We don't book ocean freight, we don't clear Hamburg customs, and we don't pretend to know German tax code. What we do is get the vehicle to the dock at a fair U.S.-domestic rate, on time for the sailing your forwarder booked.
How USA-to-Germany Shipping Works With Bold
Total elapsed time from quote to German registration is typically 8–12 weeks. Bold's piece is the first 3–10 days. Here's the full sequence:
- Book ocean freight first. A reputable U.S.-Germany forwarder (K Line, Wallenius Wilhelmsen, ARC, or a smaller broker) confirms a sailing from Baltimore or Newark to Bremerhaven or Hamburg.
- Get a Bold quote with the port address. Use our cost calculator with your U.S. origin ZIP and the forwarder's warehouse address.
- Carrier dispatched in 24–72 hours. Standard U.S. open or enclosed transport. Same drivers, same insurance, same Bill of Lading process.
- Pickup, inspection, transit. Driver inspects the vehicle, photographs it, and loads. You receive GPS updates. Use our EU-compliant pre-shipment prep guidance to satisfy both Bold's domestic carrier and your forwarder's port-side acceptance — fuel level, no personal items, key handoff, alarm disable.
- Port delivery and forwarder handoff. Driver delivers to the port warehouse. Your forwarder takes possession, files the EEI in ACE, and stages for the sailing.
- Ocean transit. Approximately 11–14 days from Baltimore to Bremerhaven, slightly longer to Hamburg.
- German arrival and customs. Forwarder's German partner clears Zoll (German customs), pays the EU import duty (10% on most used vehicles) and German VAT (Mehrwertsteuer, 19%).
- TÜV and registration. Schedule a TÜV inspection (Vollabnahme — full inspection for non-EU type-approved vehicles), get an Einzelabnahme certificate if needed, then register at your local Zulassungsstelle.

Pricing — U.S. Domestic Leg
Door-to-port pricing is the same as any other U.S. open-carrier lane. No "international" surcharge. Bremerhaven and Hamburg are the destination ports your forwarder handles — your concern on the U.S. side is just getting to the dock by the cargo cut-off.

German Import Duty, VAT, and TÜV — Reality Check
Bold is not a customs broker. The figures below are general guidance circa 2025–2026. Your forwarder's German partner will give you exact numbers. For authoritative info, see the German Customs (Zoll) portal.
- EU import duty: 10% on used cars (HS code 8703) shipped from outside the EU. Calculated on customs value (vehicle + freight + insurance).
- German VAT (MwSt.): 19% on (customs value + duty). This is the largest line item.
- Zoll handling fee: Approximately €60–€150 depending on the port and broker.
- TÜV Vollabnahme (full inspection): Required for vehicles without EU type approval. Approximately €700–€1,200 because U.S.-spec headlights, taillights, and emissions hardware almost always require modification before passing.
- Headlight/taillight modification: U.S.-spec amber turn signals fail TÜV. Budget €300–€800 for ECE-spec lights and a labeled installation.
- Registration (Zulassung): €25–€60 plus license plates.
SOFA exemption: If you're U.S. military or civilian DOD on SOFA orders, you can register your vehicle on USAREUR or USAFE plates and bypass German registration entirely while stationed there. Talk to your installation's vehicle registration office (typically called the "VRO" or "USAREUR Reg Section"). SOFA-status shipments through the Personal Property Shipping Office have a different forwarder process and Bold simply delivers to the appointed origin pickup point.

Lead Time and Booking
The U.S. domestic leg is straightforward — Bold dispatches most shipments in 24–72 hours and gets the vehicle to the port in 3–10 days depending on distance. The squeeze is the cargo cut-off: every sailing has a date by which your vehicle must be at the warehouse, usually 5–7 days before the ship leaves. Book Bold to arrive 2–4 days ahead of cut-off so a delay (weather, mechanical, traffic) doesn't bump you to the next sailing — which is typically 1–2 weeks later.
Übersiedlungsgut Returning-Resident Waiver + Historic Plates
Übersiedlungsgut (German for "household goods relocation") is a permanent-resident relief program — German citizens or long-term EU residents returning to Germany can import a vehicle duty-free and VAT-free, saving 10% customs + 19% MwSt VAT (often €5,000–€15,000). Eligibility is strict: you must have lived outside the EU 12+ months continuously, must have owned the vehicle 6+ months before relocation, and must remain titled in the same name 12+ months after import (an anti-flipping clause).
Application happens at the Hauptzollamt (German customs main office) at the port of entry. Bring residency-abroad proof (lease/utility bills covering the 12-month window), the vehicle title showing 6+ months of ownership, and your German residency registration form (Anmeldung). Missing any single document blocks the relief and triggers full duty + VAT.
H-Kennzeichen historic plate
Vehicles 30+ years old with verified-original condition can apply for H-Kennzeichen (historic plate) status. The plate reduces annual road tax to a flat ~€191 (vs. €500–€1,500 for modern cars) and exempts the vehicle from low-emission zone (Umweltzone) restrictions in city centers like Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt. Approval requires a TÜV historic-vehicle inspection (~€150 surcharge over standard TÜV). Most U.S.-built classics 1996 and earlier qualify in 2026.
After Your Vehicle Arrives in Germany — Anmeldung to Plates
Once your vehicle clears Bremerhaven or Hamburg, you walk through five steps before you can drive on German roads. Bold does not handle any of this — but every U.S. shipper relocating to Germany will. Here is the sequence.
- Customs clearance + EU type approval — at the Hauptzollamt. Declare the vehicle at the Hauptzollamt (main customs office). Pay 10% EU import duty + 19% MwSt VAT on the customs value, or claim the Übersiedlungsgut waiver if you qualify (see section above — eligibility requires 12+ months residence outside the EU and 6+ months ownership). Customs issues the Zollbescheid receipt, which you carry to every following step.
- TÜV inspection — Vollabnahme. Required for any vehicle without EU homologation, which covers nearly every U.S.-spec car. Book at any TÜV or DEKRA station. Fee runs €700–€1,200. The inspection tests emissions (Euro 4 or higher for newer vehicles, with retrofit catalytic converter for older cars), headlight conversion (Hella conversion kit standard), rear fog light installation, speedometer in km/h scale, and license-plate light positioning. Receive the TÜV pass certificate.
- Insurance — Haftpflicht is mandatory. German Haftpflicht (third-party liability) is required before the Zulassungsstelle will issue plates. Typical cost is €300–€700/yr depending on driver history and vehicle category. The insurer issues an eVB number (electronic insurance confirmation code) — bring this code, not a paper certificate.
- Anmeldung at the Zulassungsstelle. Visit your local Zulassungsstelle (vehicle registration office). Bring the TÜV pass certificate, the customs Zollbescheid, your eVB insurance code, and your German residency Anmeldung (residence registration). Pay the €30–€60 admin fee. License plates are issued same-day.
- First Kfz-Steuer (road tax). The Bundeszentralamt für Steuern auto-bills annual Kfz-Steuer based on emissions class and engine displacement. No separate filing required — the bill arrives by post 4–8 weeks after registration.
Total post-arrival timeline: 6–10 weeks from port to road-legal.

Do you ship cars all the way to Germany?
No — Bold handles the U.S. domestic leg only. We deliver your vehicle to a U.S. East Coast port (Baltimore or Newark typically) and your freight forwarder takes over for ocean freight, U.S. export filing, and German customs clearance. Bremerhaven and Hamburg are the most common German destination ports.
I'm SOFA-status military — does that change anything?
For Bold's part, no — we deliver to the same East Coast ports. Most SOFA shipments go through the Personal Property Shipping Office (PPSO) and use a designated forwarder. Sometimes the PPSO arranges its own domestic transport; if so, Bold is not in your move. If you're shipping privately (not via PPSO) — which is increasingly common for second vehicles — Bold is the same as any other U.S. lane.
How much will the total cost be?
Rough total for a typical mid-size U.S. car: $650–$1,800 U.S. domestic (Bold) + $1,500–$2,500 ocean freight + 10% EU duty + 19% German VAT on the customs value + €700–€1,200 TÜV. On a $25K vehicle that's typically $11K–$14K all-in. Get exact figures from your forwarder before committing.
Will my U.S.-spec car pass TÜV?
Eventually, with modifications. The most common failures: U.S. amber-only turn signals (require ECE-spec lights), headlight aim and beam pattern, missing rear fog lamp, and emissions calibration. Budget €1,000–€2,500 in modifications on top of the TÜV fee for an older U.S. vehicle. Newer vehicles built on global platforms (BMW, Mercedes, VW, etc.) tend to be cheaper to convert.
Can you ship to a Texas or Florida port instead?
For Germany, no — there's no regular RoRo service from Houston to Bremerhaven on a passenger-vehicle frequency. Texas and Gulf origins still ship out of Baltimore. The U.S. domestic leg from Houston/Dallas to Baltimore is around $1,050–$1,400, and your forwarder gets a much better ocean rate from Baltimore than they would routing freight via Houston.
Can you ship a non-running vehicle to the port?
