Norfolk Naval Station PCS Auto Transport — Atlantic Fleet's Home Port
Naval Station Norfolk is the largest naval base in the world, headquarters of U.S. Fleet Forces Command and home port for the lion's share of the Atlantic Fleet — aircraft carriers, destroyers, cruisers, amphibs, and submarines. Norfolk and the Hampton Roads metro (Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News) collectively house tens of thousands of active-duty Navy personnel, plus Coast Guard and supporting commands.
Norfolk PCS volume runs heavy in every direction — bicoastal moves to San Diego for ship transfers, Pacific PCS to Pearl Harbor and Yokosuka, and shore-tour reassignments throughout the East Coast. Carrier-deployment and homeport-shift cycles add periodic spikes outside normal PCS season.
Bold Auto Transport handles door-to-door CONUS shipping for Norfolk-area sailors. We pick up at on-base family housing or anywhere in the Hampton Roads metro — Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News — and deliver to the driveway of your next duty station. Every active duty, veteran, reservist, and dependent shipment includes our military discount, $0 deductible insurance, and a single coordinator.
Popular PCS Lanes from Norfolk Naval Station
The lanes below are the most active PCS routes we run out of Hampton Roads. Prices are real averages for standard sedans and SUVs in operable condition. Full-size trucks and three-row SUVs run 10–15% higher. Military discount applied at booking — call (469) 942-5444 or quote online.
| Route | Distance | Avg Open Rate | Transit |

| Norfolk → Yokosuka (port: Long Beach/Tacoma) | ~2,675 mi to port | $1,225–$1,450 | 8–12 days to port |

| Norfolk → Naples / Rota (Baltimore VPC) | ~225 mi | $475–$575 | 1–3 days |
Hampton Roads is one of the highest-density auto-transport origins on the East Coast, so outbound spot pricing tends to be favorable. Inbound (toward Norfolk) lanes from the West Coast can run 5–10% higher in summer.
PCS Timing Strategy for Norfolk
Navy PCS volume peaks May through August, but the Norfolk dynamic is different from Big-Army bases — ship homeport shifts, carrier deployment cycles, and Yard Period transitions create off-cycle spikes. If your orders coincide with a major homeport change or a deployment turn-over, expect the local market to tighten.
- 4+ weeks out: Best pricing on cross-country lanes (Norfolk ↔ San Diego). Recommended for any move during May–August or during major fleet movements.
- 2–3 weeks out: Most Norfolk PCS shipments book here. Solid availability on East Coast lanes year-round.
- Inside 7 days: Possible on regional lanes (VA, NC, MD). Cross-country expedites add 25–40% premium.
- OCONUS PCS: Baltimore VPC is short-haul (~225 mi) for Europe-bound POVs. Long Beach VPC is the West Coast option for Pacific.
- Sea-tour to shore-tour transitions: If your spouse and kids are PCS-ing while you're underway, schedule pickup as soon as orders are confirmed. Bold can deliver to a relative's address or new station even if you're at sea.
Gate Access at Norfolk Naval Station
You don't need a base pass to ship a vehicle with Bold — most pickups happen off-base. For on-base family housing pickups:
- Gate 5 (Hampton Boulevard) is the primary visitor entry, with the Pass and ID office co-located.
- Gate 3 (Admiral Taussig Boulevard) handles additional flow.
- Carrier drivers without DoD credentials are sponsored or routed through Pass and ID. Most Bold carriers prefer off-base pickup at a commercial cross-street to avoid long gate processing.
- Off-base pickup zones we use most: Hampton Boulevard / Granby Street commercial corridors, Virginia Beach Walmart on Independence Blvd, MacArthur Center area, Chesapeake Square, Portsmouth I-264 access points.
For on-base pickups in family housing areas, your coordinator handles sponsor sign-in before dispatch.
Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) Handoff for OCONUS PCS
Norfolk-area sailors PCS-ing OCONUS ship POVs through the DoD's Vehicle Processing Center network (currently IAL). Closest VPCs:
- Baltimore, MD — Europe and Mediterranean POVs (Naples, Rota, Souda Bay, Bahrain). About 225 mi from Norfolk — easily a 1-day haul.
- Long Beach, CA — Pacific destinations (Yokosuka, Sasebo, Pearl Harbor)
- Tacoma, WA — secondary Pacific option for some routes
What Bold handles vs. what TMO handles:
- What TMO/VPC handles: Free POV ocean shipment from U.S. port to your overseas duty station.
- What Bold handles: The CONUS leg from Hampton Roads to the VPC if you can't drive it yourself, or the second-vehicle shipment to a stateside storage destination.
- Second vehicle: The DoD covers one POV. A second car ships via Bold to a relative's address or storage destination.
- Returning OCONUS to CONUS: When your POV lands back at a U.S. VPC, Bold picks up at the port and delivers anywhere in the lower 48.

Mediterranean PCS via Baltimore VPC
Naples, Rota, Souda Bay, Bahrain — Europe and Med POVs route through Baltimore. Norfolk → Baltimore is short, $475–$575, with 1–3 day transit. Fast turn at the VPC means your POV is on the boat quickly.
Sea-Tour to Shore-Tour Transition

EAS / Retirement in Hampton Roads
Many sailors separate or retire and stay in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, or the Outer Banks. Local moves run regional pricing — same-day or next-day pickup possible.
Bold's Military Discount Applies on Every Order
Every Bold shipment for active duty, veterans, reservists, National Guard, or dependents includes our military discount. No promo code needed — mention your branch and status at booking. Stacks with multi-vehicle pricing.
For pricing on standard open carrier or enclosed transport, those rates apply with the military discount layered on top.
What to Expect — Pickup and Delivery
Driver calls 24 hours ahead with a 2-hour pickup window, again 30–60 minutes before arrival. Wash vehicle, reduce fuel to a quarter tank, remove personal items above trunk-floor level, have keys and photo ID ready.
Inspection in front of you — driver completes a Bill of Lading (BOL), marks pre-existing damage, takes photos. Sign the BOL. Take your own timestamped photos.
At delivery, walk the vehicle with the driver, compare to the BOL, sign. Note any discrepancy before signing. Carrier balance is paid on delivery in cash, certified check, or money order. If you're underway during delivery, your designated POC signs on your behalf — set this up at booking.

First time using a company like this, very polite from the dispatcher to the driver. Was able to get my car towed in a reasonable time and within the time frame they gave out. Also very reasonable with the price. Would definitely use them again if I had too.
We had a good experience with Bold Auto Transport. Their price was reasonable, they showed up on time to get the car, transported it cross country, and it arrived when they said it would - in good condition. It was dirty on the outside but we knew the truck …
