How much does it cost to ship a Rolls-Royce?
Rolls-Royce Shipping — Engineered Around the Marque
A Rolls-Royce isn't just a luxury car. It's a 5,500–6,000-pound coachbuilt object with a starlight headliner that takes 800 fiber optic strands to repair, paint that often includes hand-stripped pinstriping, and an interior that — depending on bespoke commission — can include leather sourced from a single hide and wood from a tree the buyer personally selected at Goodwood. The shipping job has to honor that.
Bold has moved Phantom VIIIs from West Coast estates to East Coast garages, Ghosts off auction wins at RM Sotheby's and Gooding & Company sales, Cullinans for ultra-high-net-worth families relocating between coasts, the new Spectre EV from port deliveries to private collections, and a few Wraiths and Dawns from Bring a Trailer purchases. Most are dealer-orchestrated, some are factory-redelivery, all of them are climate-controlled enclosed, and almost all are heavy-duty rated trailers because of the curb weight.
If you're shipping a Rolls-Royce, the question isn't "open or enclosed." The questions are: is the trailer rated for the weight, is the headliner protected, is the carrier the right human for the job, and do you want to attend pickup yourself.
Why Rolls-Royce Needs Heavy-Duty Enclosed (Not Standard Enclosed)
Curb weights matter here. Most enclosed auto transport trailers are rated for vehicles up to about 5,500 lbs gross. That's fine for a 488 Pista (3,200 lbs), a 911 GT3 (3,200 lbs), even a Bentley Continental GT (5,000 lbs). It's not fine for current Rolls-Royce production:
- Rolls-Royce Cullinan: ~6,070 lbs curb weight (Black Badge: ~6,170 lbs)
- Rolls-Royce Phantom (VIII): ~5,860 lbs (Extended Wheelbase: ~6,050 lbs)
- Rolls-Royce Ghost (II): ~5,490 lbs (Extended: ~5,600 lbs)
- Rolls-Royce Spectre (EV): ~6,500 lbs (battery pack adds significant mass)
- Rolls-Royce Wraith / Dawn: ~5,400–5,650 lbs
A Cullinan or Spectre over 6,000 lbs requires either a 2-car solo or paired-load enclosed trailer with reinforced deck plates, or a heavy-duty single-vehicle enclosed transporter. Standard 4–6 car enclosed trailers can't safely accommodate two Cullinans without exceeding axle weight ratings. Our dispatch team confirms trailer weight rating in writing before booking. If a carrier quotes you "standard enclosed" for a Cullinan, that's the wrong carrier.

Starlight Headliner Protection
The starlight headliner — that fiber-optic celestial dome that owners famously commission with custom constellations, family birthdates, or specific city skylines — is the single most expensive interior element in any modern car. A standard Phantom starlight headliner uses approximately 800–1,200 fiber optic strands hand-installed into a perforated leather panel. A bespoke commission can use 12,000+ strands and replicate a specific night sky on a specific date. Replacement cost runs from $12,000 for stock to $80,000+ for fully bespoke.
Two transit-specific risks to the starlight headliner that most carriers don't think about:
- Temperature swings. The fiber optic strands are bonded into perforated leather. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles in non-climate trailers (think: Boston pickup in February → Atlanta delivery via overnight stop in Tennessee mountains) cause leather contraction and fiber stress. We climate-control every Rolls trip — 60–75°F held — for this reason.
- Vibration. Highway-frequency vibration over 7+ days can loosen fiber optic strand mounting at the perforation interface. Air-ride suspension trailers reduce this dramatically. We default to air-ride for all Phantom and Ghost shipments.
For bespoke headliners (custom constellation commissions, replicated sky charts), we add interior dust covers and humidity-monitor tags to the trailer. The covers stay on the headliner the entire trip. Standard practice. Worth confirming with your coordinator at booking.
Spirit of Ecstasy — The Retraction Protocol Every Carrier Must Follow
The Spirit of Ecstasy — the chrome-winged figure on every Rolls-Royce hood since 1911 — is a $4,000–$8,000 standalone replacement part on current production cars (more for the illuminated crystal version available on Phantom and Spectre). She is also retractable, and forgetting that single fact is the #1 cause of customer-side fury at Rolls-Royce delivery.
On every Phantom VII, Phantom VIII, Ghost (II), Cullinan, Spectre, Wraith, and Dawn, the Spirit of Ecstasy retracts into the radiator shell when:
- The vehicle is locked from outside (auto-retract on most modern Rolls-Royce).
- The driver presses the dedicated retraction button on the dashboard (some bespoke commissions).
- An anti-theft sensor detects unauthorized contact with the figurine.
Why this matters for transit: the figurine extends approximately 4 inches above the bonnet line in deployed position. On enclosed trailers with limited overhead clearance — particularly multi-car enclosed trailers carrying a Phantom in the lower position — a deployed Spirit of Ecstasy can contact the trailer ceiling, shear off at the mount, and damage the bonnet paint at the base. We have seen $12,000 in damage from a single 600-mile shipment because a substitute carrier driver didn't know the figurine retracted.
Bold's enforced Spirit of Ecstasy protocol on every Rolls-Royce shipment:
- Owner or driver locks the vehicle from the key fob at pickup — this triggers auto-retraction on all current production models (Phantom VIII forward, Ghost II, Cullinan, Spectre).
- Driver visually confirms retraction before loading. The figurine should sit flush with the radiator shell. Photograph the retracted position on the BOL.
- For older cars without auto-retraction (some Phantom VII, early Ghost, classic Silver Cloud / Silver Shadow / Corniche), the retraction is manual — typically a key-operated lock at the base or, on classics, the figurine is removable entirely. Bold's coordinator confirms the procedure with the owner before pickup and may recommend the figurine be removed and shipped separately in original packaging for classic cars.
- The illuminated crystal Spirit of Ecstasy on Spectre and recent Phantom commissions has the same retraction behavior, but the LED feed wire requires extra care — the figurine should be fully retracted before any over-cabin trailer roof is closed; the wire harness sits in a small channel and a partial-retraction position can pinch the harness.
- At delivery, the driver confirms the figurine deploys correctly when the owner unlocks the vehicle. If the figurine sticks (rare but possible after a long shipment in cold), a simple finger-press on the radiator-shell housing typically frees the deploy mechanism. If it doesn't deploy at all, document on the delivery BOL before the owner signs.
We never ship a Rolls-Royce with the Spirit of Ecstasy in any position other than fully retracted. Coachbuild commissions — Sweptail, Boat Tail, Droptail — typically have unique figurine arrangements that may not retract conventionally; for these vehicles we run a coachbuilt-specific dispatch protocol with Goodwood-trained handlers and a single-vehicle trailer that has documented overhead clearance.
Climate-Controlled Trailers — Standard for Every Rolls-Royce
Every Rolls-Royce we ship rolls in a climate-controlled enclosed trailer. Held at 60–75°F for the duration of the trip. Three reasons:
- Bespoke leather and wood. Hand-stitched leather and grain-matched wood veneers are dimensionally sensitive to humidity. A $20,000 commission of book-matched walnut on a Phantom dashboard can develop hairline veneer separation if the interior humidity swings 30% over a week.
- Paint condition on bespoke colors. Many Rolls-Royce paint commissions use fine metallic flake or candy clearcoat layers that reflect minor temperature stress as micro-cracking under direct UV. Climate trailers eliminate that exposure.
- Battery and electronics on Spectre EV. The Spectre's high-voltage battery has thermal management that runs even at rest. Climate trailers reduce parasitic battery management draw during transit.
Factory Delivery and Redelivery — White-Glove Logistics
Rolls-Royce's factory at Goodwood doesn't ship to dealers the way a Honda dealer gets a shipment. Each car is a commissioned vehicle for a specific buyer — sometimes literally hand-delivered. We support both directions of factory logistics:
- Factory delivery (port to buyer): Rolls-Royce vehicles arrive at US ports (typically NY/NJ for East Coast, Long Beach/San Diego for West Coast). The dealer (or sometimes Rolls-Royce direct) handles port clearance and PDI. We pick up from the dealer's PDI facility — often in dealer-coordinated white-glove protocol — and deliver to the buyer's residence.
- Redelivery (buyer to factory or service): For Goodwood-adjacent service work, certain bespoke updates, or end-of-lease returns, we handle the buyer-end pickup and route to the requesting facility. For factory return to Goodwood, the vehicle goes via shipping container — we coordinate the US-side leg.
- Owner-attended pickup: Many Rolls owners want to be present at pickup or want their personal driver/security present. We schedule fixed pickup windows — not "between 10 AM and 4 PM" — and accommodate owner-attended protocols. This includes detailed handoff documentation and buyer/seller signature requirements.
Owner-Attended Pickup Protocol
Most luxury transport is "drop the keys, sign the BOL, watch the carrier drive away." For Rolls-Royce, many owners prefer a more involved handoff — and we structure for it:
- Fixed pickup window. 30-minute arrival window, confirmed 4 hours in advance. No "we'll be there sometime today."
- Pre-pickup walkaround with owner. 15–30 minutes documenting condition with the carrier driver and any owner-designated representative (personal assistant, security detail, family office staff).
- Photo documentation by both parties. Carrier takes BOL photos. Owner takes parallel photos. Both filed with our coordinator.
- Verbal confirmation of bespoke features. Starlight headliner constellation pattern noted on BOL. Bespoke paint code referenced. Coachline color and route documented (the hand-painted pinstripe on certain models).
- Owner-defined route restrictions. If the owner wants the vehicle to avoid certain weather (e.g., crossing the Rockies in winter), we route accordingly. May add 1–2 days transit and $200–$500 routing premium.
- Designated delivery contact. Often a family office representative or estate manager rather than the owner directly. Coordinated 48 hours before delivery.
Pre-Pickup Checklist
- Document existing condition with high-resolution photos. Every panel, wheel face, the Spirit of Ecstasy, headlight bezels, taillight bezels, exhaust tips. Include macro shots of any bespoke detail (coachline, pinstriping, custom paint).
- Photograph the starlight headliner illuminated. If bespoke, photograph the constellation pattern as illuminated baseline.
- Note the bespoke commission code / VIN spec sheet location. Stash in glove box, not the trunk where it could be misplaced.
- Reduce fuel to 1/4 tank (or charge Spectre to 50%).
- Disable all alarms, GPS trackers, and connected services. Rolls-Royce Connected drains the battery during transit and triggers false alerts every cellular dead zone.
- Set air suspension to high mode if equipped. Standard on Phantom and Ghost. Reduces ground clearance issues at loading.
- Provide both keys (primary + valet/service key). Spirit of Ecstasy auto-deploy/retract should be confirmed working.
- Disable Spirit of Ecstasy auto-retract on Phantom. Or note its position. Some owners request it remain in deployed position; some request retracted for transport. Confirm preference with carrier.
- Wash and detail the vehicle 24 hours before pickup. Existing micro-scratches need to be visible for BOL.
- Be present (or have authorized representative present). Walk the BOL line by line.
Bill of Lading — Rolls-Royce-Specific Inspection Points
- Spirit of Ecstasy: Photograph deployed and retracted. Confirm motor function.
- Coach lines / hand-painted pinstripe: Document the line itself — color, route on body. Replacement requires factory paint specialist.
- Bespoke paint condition: Macro photos. Document any orange peel, micro-scratches, or polish swirls.
- Wheel faces and centercaps: Spinning RR centercaps are mechanical and can be damaged. Document each.
- Suicide doors (Phantom, Ghost, Wraith): Open and close in front of driver. Document hinge alignment.
- Powerclose door operation: Test the soft-close mechanism — any noise or hesitation noted.
- Starlight headliner (illuminated): Photograph constellation pattern. Document any non-illuminated strand.
- Wood veneer and inlay: Macro photos of bespoke wood. Note any visible grain disruption or seam.
- Leather stitching: Particularly bespoke contrast stitching. Document.
- Picnic tables / champagne cooler / commissioning treasury items: Operation tested in front of driver.
- Umbrella deployment (Phantom / Ghost): Open and close the door-mounted umbrella mechanism.
- Underbody panels: Aluminum architecture is expensive to repair. Photograph from beneath.
$500K–$1M+ Insurance Handling
Standard cargo insurance on enclosed transport tops out around $500k. For most current Rolls-Royce production (Ghost, Wraith, Cullinan in standard spec), this is sufficient. For Phantom EWB with extensive bespoke, Spectre, Black Badge variants, and any coachbuilt or vintage Rolls, we structure supplemental coverage:
- $500k–$1M: Standard carrier supplemental rider. Same-day quote.
- $1M–$5M: Lloyd's of London transit policy. 24–48 hour underwriting.
- Coachbuilt (Sweptail, Boat Tail, Droptail, Spectre coachbuilds): Custom syndicate coverage. Multi-week underwriting. Required for any bespoke commission.
- $0 deductible standard. Non-negotiable for high-value Rolls work.
- Agreed-value vs. ACV: Agreed-value preferred. Document the bespoke commission code and current MSRP/appraisal at booking.
What Generic Brokers Get Wrong About Rolls-Royce
- They book standard enclosed trailers under-rated for Cullinan/Spectre weight. Carrier shows up, can't safely load, you reschedule.
- They don't climate-control. Bespoke wood and leather suffer.
- They don't document the starlight headliner. Damage shows up at delivery; no baseline; claim disputed.
- They schedule "between 10 AM and 4 PM" pickup windows. Owner expectations don't align with that.
- They don't know factory delivery protocol. They roll up to the dealer's PDI bay without authorization, get turned away.
- They cap insurance at $250k. $300k undercoverage on a $750k Phantom.
- They subcontract to whichever carrier has capacity. A driver who's never handled a Phantom will scuff the Spirit of Ecstasy on day one.

Rolls-Royce Shipping FAQs
Questions Rolls-Royce owners and family offices ask — heavy-duty trailers, headliner protection, owner-attended pickup, bespoke insurance.
Why does Rolls-Royce need a heavy-duty enclosed trailer?
Curb weight. Cullinan and Spectre exceed 6,000 lbs. Phantom EWB approaches 6,050 lbs. Standard enclosed trailers rated for 5,500-lb max can't safely carry a Phantom and another vehicle without exceeding axle weight ratings. We dispatch HD-rated trailers for every Rolls — confirmed in writing with the carrier before booking.
How do you protect the starlight headliner during transport?
Climate-controlled trailers held at 60–75°F (no temperature cycling that stresses the leather panel and fiber optics) and air-ride suspension trailers (reduces highway-frequency vibration that can loosen fiber strand mounting). For bespoke headliners with custom constellations, we add interior dust covers that stay on the entire trip.
Can I be present at pickup or have a representative attend?
Yes — we structure owner-attended pickup with 30-minute fixed arrival windows (not the typical 6-hour ranges) and pre-coordinated walkaround protocol. Family office staff, personal assistants, security details, and estate managers are all common as designated representatives. Coordinated at booking.
How is insurance handled for $500K+ Rolls-Royce vehicles?
Standard carrier coverage runs to $500k with $0 deductible. Above that, we structure supplemental Lloyd's of London transit policies up to $5M+, agreed-value terms preferred. For coachbuilt cars (Sweptail, Boat Tail, Droptail), custom syndicate coverage with multi-week underwriting is required and included in our coordination.
Do you handle factory delivery from port and dealer PDI?
Yes. We pick up from authorized Rolls-Royce dealer PDI facilities (port-cleared, dealer-prepped vehicles) and deliver to buyer residences with white-glove protocol — coordinated handoff, documented condition baseline from dealer, and direct communication with the dealer's delivery specialist throughout.
How much does Rolls-Royce shipping cost coast-to-coast?
$3,200–$4,000 for a Wraith or Dawn on climate enclosed; $3,400–$4,300 for a Ghost; $4,200–$5,200 for a Phantom EWB on heavy-duty climate enclosed; $4,000–$5,000 for a Cullinan; coachbuilt cars (Sweptail, Boat Tail) start at $8,000+ on solo-load HD climate. Quote your route →
