Fort Drum PCS Auto Transport — Cold-Weather Prep, Long-Haul Lanes
Fort Drum in Watertown, NY is the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) — the most-deployed division in the U.S. Army. The base sits in the North Country, just south of the St. Lawrence River and an hour from the Canadian border. Winters are real: lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario regularly puts down 200+ inches per season. Most outbound PCS lanes from Drum are long-haul because the geography puts you 5+ hours from any other major Army post.
10th Mountain PCS volume tends toward warm-weather destinations — Hawaii (Schofield Barracks), Italy (173rd Airborne in Vicenza, although that's a separate command, families often transition), Korea, and Texas posts. The contrast in climate makes vehicle prep more important than at most posts.
Bold Auto Transport handles door-to-door CONUS shipping for Fort Drum families. We pick up at on-post family housing (Mountain Community, Hutton Heights, Patrick Hill) or at off-post addresses anywhere in Watertown, Black River, Carthage, Adams, or Pulaski — and deliver to the driveway of your next duty station.
Popular PCS Lanes from Fort Drum

| Fort Drum → Fort Carson (CO) | ~1,800 mi | $1,000–$1,200 | 6–9 days |
Northern New York is a low-density origin for auto transport — there's no major metro nearby and most carriers don't run dedicated Watertown lanes daily. Booking 3+ weeks out makes a meaningful difference, especially in winter.
PCS Timing Strategy for Fort Drum
10th Mountain Division PCS volume peaks May through August like the rest of the Army, but Fort Drum has a unique winter dynamic. December through March dispatch can be delayed by lake-effect storms — I-81 closures, especially between Watertown and Syracuse, are common. If your orders fall in winter months, build in 3–5 extra days for dispatch and transit.
- 4+ weeks out: Strongly recommended for any cross-country PCS during May–August or any winter shipment.
- 2–3 weeks out: Most Drum PCS shipments book here. Solid availability on Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regional lanes.
- Inside 7 days: Possible on regional lanes (NY, PA, OH). Cross-country expedites add 25–40% premium and may not be available in winter weather.
- Cold-weather vehicle prep: If you're shipping in or out of Drum during winter, make sure the battery is healthy, fluids are at correct levels for transport temperature range, and the vehicle starts reliably for loading.
- Hawaii / Korea PCS: Drum → Long Beach (Hawaii) and Drum → Tacoma (Korea) are both ~2,650+ mi long-hauls. Schedule pickup so the vehicle arrives at the VPC 5–7 business days before turn-in window.
Gate Access at Fort Drum
You don't need a base pass to ship a vehicle with Bold — most pickups happen off-post. For on-post family housing pickups:
- Iraqi Freedom Drive Gate is the primary visitor entry, with the Visitor Control Center co-located. Patrick Hill family housing is closest.
- Mountain Community Drive Gate handles housing-area access on the south side of post.
- Carrier drivers without DoD credentials are sponsored or routed through the Visitor Control Center. Most Bold carriers prefer off-post pickup at a commercial cross-street.
- Off-post pickup zones we use most: Watertown commercial corridors (US-11, NY-3), Salmon Run Mall area, Black River off NY-3.
For on-post pickups at Mountain Community, Hutton Heights, or Patrick Hill, your coordinator handles sponsor sign-in before dispatch.
Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) Handoff for OCONUS PCS
Fort Drum service members PCS-ing OCONUS ship POVs through the DoD's Vehicle Processing Center network (currently IAL). Closest VPCs:
- Baltimore, MD — Europe-bound POVs (Italy, Germany, UK). ~430 mi from Drum, easily a 1-day haul.
- Long Beach, CA — Japan, Korea, Hawaii, Pacific destinations
- Tacoma, WA — Korea-bound POVs
What Bold handles vs. what TMO handles:
- What TMO/VPC handles: Free POV ocean shipment from U.S. port to your overseas duty station.
- What Bold handles: The CONUS leg from Watertown to the VPC if you can't drive it yourself, or the second-vehicle shipment to a stateside storage destination.
- Second vehicle: The DoD covers one POV. A second car ships via Bold to a relative's address or storage destination.
- Returning OCONUS to CONUS: When your POV lands back at a U.S. VPC, Bold picks up at the port and delivers anywhere in the lower 48.
Real PCS Scenarios from Fort Drum
Hawaii PCS to Schofield Barracks
10th Mountain to 25th Infantry Division reassignments are common. Drum → Long Beach VPC runs ~2,800 mi, 8–12 days, $1,250–$1,475 with the military discount.
Italy PCS through Baltimore VPC
Drum → Baltimore is one of our shorter Drum lanes. About 430 mi, 2–4 days, $575–$700. Fast turn at the VPC means your POV is on the boat quickly.
Korea PCS through Tacoma VPC
Drum → Tacoma is a full cross-country lane. About 2,650 mi, 8–11 days, $1,200–$1,425. Schedule the VPC turn-in 5–7 business days after expected delivery.
Cold-Weather Departure / Tropical Arrival
Watertown winter shipments to Hawaii, Florida, Texas, or California require extra prep. Make sure the vehicle has been started and driven recently — a vehicle sitting in 0°F for weeks may not start reliably for loading. Battery health matters.
Bold's Military Discount Applies on Every Order
Every Bold shipment for active duty, veterans, reservists, National Guard, or dependents includes our military discount. No promo code needed — mention your branch and status at booking. Stacks with multi-vehicle pricing.
For pricing on standard open carrier or enclosed transport, those rates apply with the military discount layered on top.
What to Expect — Pickup and Delivery
Driver calls 24 hours ahead with a 2-hour pickup window, again 30–60 minutes before arrival. Wash vehicle (or have it ready to inspect — winter mud is fine, the BOL inspection focuses on dents and damage), reduce fuel to a quarter tank, remove personal items above trunk-floor level, have keys and photo ID ready.
Inspection in front of you — driver completes a Bill of Lading (BOL), marks pre-existing damage, takes photos. Sign the BOL. Take your own timestamped photos.
At delivery, walk the vehicle with the driver, compare to the BOL, sign. Note any discrepancy before signing. Carrier balance is paid on delivery in cash, certified check, or money order.

Fort Drum Auto Transport FAQs
PCS questions we hear from 10th Mountain Division families.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Fort Drum?
Open carrier rates from Fort Drum range from about $575 (regional, 430 mi to Baltimore VPC) to $1,475 (cross-country, 2,800 mi to Long Beach VPC) with the military discount applied. Use our cost calculator for your specific lane.
Can you ship in winter from Fort Drum?
Yes — but build in 3–5 extra days for lake-effect storm delays. December through March, I-81 closures between Watertown and Syracuse are common. Make sure the vehicle starts reliably and the battery is healthy before pickup day.
Do you pick up on post at Fort Drum?
Yes — most pickups happen off-post in Watertown for speed, but on-post family housing pickups (Mountain Community, Patrick Hill, Hutton Heights) can be coordinated through the Iraqi Freedom Drive Gate Visitor Control Center. Tell your coordinator at booking.
What if my orders change?
Tell your coordinator. We reschedule or cancel at no penalty.
Will the Army reimburse this shipment?
For PCS moves, typically yes — through your TMO/PPSO. We provide invoices and BOLs formatted for reimbursement. Confirm specific entitlements with the Fort Drum Personal Property Shipping Office before you ship.
Can I ship a second vehicle for an OCONUS PCS?
Yes — military discount stacks with multi-vehicle pricing. The DoD only covers one POV through TMO; a second vehicle ships via Bold to a CONUS storage destination such as a relative's driveway.
